Beskrivelse
Sugar gliders are small gliding marsupials and are only rarely found with private animal keepers in Germany. However, you can frequently see these comical and social animals around the world in zoos and animal parks. NEKTON-Sugar Glider is a special supplementary feed rich in vitamins and minerals aligned towards this animal’s needs. It is important to pay attention to a balanced diet. That can turn out to be difficult, as sugar gliders can be very selective. They tend to develop a liking towards their favorite food. FURTHER INFORMATION
The sugar glider (petaurus breviceps) is a smalltree-dwelling marsupial and originates from Indonesia, New Guinea, New Zealand and Australia. In the wild, the sugar glider lives in forest areas which are predominantly covered with eucalyptus and rubber trees. An adult sugar glider reaches the size of a southern flying squirrel (approx. 10 cm from the nose to the end of the tail) and has a glidingmembrane (patagium) from its front paws to its ankle, which enables it to glide from tree to tree. An imported adult animal general has a brown coloring. This probably comes from its diet and the color of the tree in which it lives. Its furry tail is not just used for gripping but for balancing or as a rudder during flight.
There are lots of thing to bear in mind before deciding on a sugar glider as a pet. Sugar gliders are nocturnal animals and can be very selective eaters. They can reach up to 15 years of age in captivity. Generally speaking, sugar gliders are very social animals. With the right amount of care and attention they will give you many hours of joy.
The cage should be as large and tall as possible because sugar gliders like to climb. Give them something to clime, e.g. freshly cut branches from non-toxic trees and and shrubs (willow, aspen or apple). Replace the branches with fresh ones as soon as they are dry. Several parrot toys, such as ladders, ropes and rings are appreciated by sugar gliders for their exercise.
A small platform to rest, a nesting box and sleeping bags should definitely be set up in the cage. These should be arranged in the upper third of the cage because sugar gliders love to rest in higher areas. Spread small animal bedding or small amounts of non-poisonous leaves and grass without chemical additives on the floor of the cage to give the sugar glider the possibility to build a nest. A room temperature between 23 and 29 degrees is recommended, the humidity may lie in the range usual for the house.
Select a quiet location for the cage so that the sleepy heads are not disturbed by house noises and people walking past during the day. In the wild, sugar gliders live on nectar, pollen, fruits and juice and well as buds, berries and small insects. The high sugar content is due to the animal’s rapid metabolism, hence their name “sugar glider”.
If they are kept as pets, the sugar glider’s diet must consist of at least 15-25 percent from animal protein and 75 percent from plant components. A typically fresh diet includes a mix of different fruit and vegetables. Avoid giving them citrus fruits and do not feed them too much of the same fruit. A small amount of hard boiled egg yolk, premium wet food for cats and a few sunflower seeds and soft seed round off the menu. Sugar gliders love nuts but only feed them these in moderation, e.g. one nut per day, otherwise your pet could become too fat.
Feed them late afternoon or early evening, when sugar gliders like to eat. This also reduces the appearance of fruit flies. Remove all uneaten fruit in the morning. A diet made up exclusively of dry feed is not recommended. It is impractical when pet owners work irregular hours or are away for one or two days.
Two meals per day are better than one so that the digestive process can be split up. Give them a small meal in the morning and the main meal in the early evening.
